New Player On Mobile Market

October31

Earlier this week saw the launch of a new mobile virtual network operator, Black + White. This is a virtual network running on the Vodafone network. The market this operator is going after are prepaid customers, and getting them on a monthly bill. One thing that makes them different from the other players, one one of the good things they have to offer to the table is no contracts. You can cancel at anytime, and if you notify them 30 days in advance there is no disconnection fee.

As a prepaid user myself, like many of my friends are, for us this is in no way appealings. Some of the reasons we are on prepaid are because we can only spend what we have so there is no debt. We only pay for what we use so we are no wasting money on minutes that would go wasted. It’s really cheap and convenient and we are not tied down to a contract of any sort. We are the low users, don’t really call much and don’t text much either, or if we only text, for $10, we get a considerable amount of texts that usually last.

The base plan on B+W is $30, and for that you get $0.60/m calls and 600 texts per month. That’s $30 and your calling on top of that. If you compare that to prepaid on Telecom or Vodafone, you would have to make 70 minutes worth of voice calls for to costs to be equal. And on that point, if a prepaid customer really does that many minutes on calling per month, they should probably be on a plan of some description. In comparison, for $30 on Vodafone, you get 600 texts, 30 minutes and 1 BestMate. You are stuck on a 12 month contract, but the disconnection fee is very little on this plan that you might as well pay for it than extra for the minutes on B+W.

The other plans are more on par with the current offerings of Vodafone. The only real difference in that you are not tied down to a 12 or 24 month contract. I wouldn’t know how many prepaid customers pay over $60 a month on there phone, but if they do, they should probably be on a plan that offers them a better deal. The only reason I can see that a person doing this wouldn’t get onto a plan is the contract period, but even then the savings would probably be able to pay for any disconnection fee or plan changing fee if one occurred. If ones phone usage fluctuates a bit through the year, then I could see them jumping onto this.

And seeing as the Vodafone plans and B+W plans are quite comparable, I don’t see anyone jumping ship. If you are already locked into a Vodafone plan, playing the disconnection fee and going onto B+W isn’t going to gain you anything, just maybe make you look a bit silly. If you are already out of your contract period, then there is really no reason to switch because if something better came along, you can already easily jump ship.

I don’t know much about this but from what I see, I don’t see this really taking off. Its a nice alternative to what is now on offer but the only thing they really bring to the table is no contract terms. As for marketing towards prepaid customers, I don’t know how many users would actually benefit from going onto a plan with them. I was thinking about switching to them before I knew the plans because I thought they might have something that could appeal to me. All I spend is $10 a month on Vodafone for 2000 texts to other Vodafone mobiles (Peppery in other words.) I would like a plan that can give me at least 500 to any mobile in New Zealand for around the same price I pay currently. Unfortunately only Telecom offer this on prepaid, but I can’t use my iPhone with them (yet.)

Vodafone New Zealand And Its iPhone

July9

Yesterday at 10am, Vodafone New Zealand announce their plans for the new Apple iPhone they are releasing on the 11th of July. We had been waiting for weeks to get this information and a couple of days before launch, they finally gave it to us. I can see why they waited till the last minute (look at what happened in Canada.) The prices are really expensive for the average mobile user and New Zealanders were not pleased at all with what Vodafone had to offer.

At 10am, on the dot, the Vodafone New Zealand site was hit by many users that wanted to see the plan. But to everyones surprise, the site went down immediately due to the huge amount of traffic. You would think Vodafone would have foreseen this happening and done something to prevent it, but no, they were pretty useless so we had to get the information from other sources until the Vodafone site was back up, which was over an hour later.

Anyway, the price of the iPhone plans start at $80 and go right up to $250 with 1GB of data. This is insane. From the tables below, you can see the full details of the plans as well as the total cost of ownership over the 2 year contract period. The most expensive plan costs $6000 over 2 years. You also have to option to get the phone by itself for $1100 to use on a YouChoose plan.

The plans are pathetic and the prices of them are outrageous, especially when compared to the rest of the world. Vodafone New Zealand is doing the exact same thing Rogers in Canada are doing, taking advantage of the monopoly. In saying that, New Zealands mobile costs are expensive, even before the iPhone, so when you look at it like that and compare the iPhone plans to the current plans, you get a reasonable deal, in New Zealand.

I hope something happens soon to lower mobile prices in New Zealand, not just for the iPhone, but in general. This will probably never happen, especially since there is only one GSM carrier and two in total. With little competition, there is no reason, or incentive to lower prices. I wanted to get an iPhone from Vodafone, but it doesn’t look like I will be able to. I will still get an iPhone somehow, sometime soon, you mark my words!

…And Back Again!

July2

As you know, I went off to Queenstown for 2 nights. It’s not a very long time to go away, but the time we were there was pretty action packed with a full schedule of things to look at, and do. We didn’t just go to Queenstown, we also travelled to the surrounding towns and attractions nearby. The journey starts off on Sunday late afternoon, when I went up to school with all my gear and got on the bus with about 30 other students to go off to Queenstown on a geography field trip.

The bus left school at 5pm, on the dot. Everyone managed to get there before five so no one was left behind. Then it was off to Queenstown. It was a long ride, and it started getting darker, and in about an hour of travelling, it was pitch black. We did however stop in Alexandra for dinner, which was after 7pm. I had KFC, which didn’t taste that nice. It was greasy and the chicken was tasteless. The chips were too salty for my liking. The potato and gravy was edible and so was the bread. Then we went back on the road and off to our destination.

At 9:30, we were at our destination. We were staying at Lakeland Park Camp in Kelvin Heights, which is about 30 minutes out of Queenstown. There we settled in an were in bed and lights out at 11pm. I found it difficult to get to sleep, and ended up having a horrible night. I was really tired in the morning, but a nice hot shower sorted me out. We had to get ready to leave to go into town and needed to be on the bus at quarter past nine.

From there, our first stop was Frankton, which is 6km out of Queenstown. There we first went and had a look at the Queenstown Airport, and took a lot of pictures of various things there. Next we went to the Remarkables Park shopping center. Here we had the opportunity to have a look around the shops and buy food and other things if we wanted. After that, we got back on the bus and made our way to Queenstown.

Here we just drove around the town looking at places in the town, and then we made our way to the gondola. Everyone went up the hill in the gondola and at the top there, drew a sketch of the Queenstown area as well as taking pictures of the area from the top of the hill. After that, we got to go on the Luge. It was awesome! Then we made our way down the hill and back onto the bus at quarter past twelve.

Then we went and drove up to Arrowtown. We had a look around the town, and had food there. There is not much in the town, not many shops and stuff. I had lunch there and got a Mince Pie and a Pepsi, which was damn expensive, and cost me $5.90. Rip off! It was a good pie though and it didn’t come out of my pocket so I was alright with it. Then we went back on the road.

We went to the Bungy jumping bridge and there was watched a quick video while the people going for a jump got set up. Out of all of us, only 3 of our group jumped, one was my geography teacher, and the other two did a double tandem jump. It was really cold out there but it was interesting to see people jump. It looked scary. It’s something I can never see myself doing, ever! Then we went back towards Queenstown and to the wharf so people that wanted to go on the jetboat could. I decided not to go on it.

Then it was back to camp to do whatever until it was dinner time. At 7pm, everyone got onto the bus and we went into Queenstown to have our dinner. Me and my mates walked around Queenstown for 15 minutes looking for a pizza place, but we had no luck so weended up going back and going into the mall and having McDonalds. I had a $10 voucher so I ended up getting more that I would want. I got a Large Quarter Pounder combo, a hamburger, and a chocolate ice cream sundae. After eating all of that, I was pretty full. I do however regret eating the sundae, because it was damn cold and I was frozen for ages.

Then we made it back to the camp where we watch 2 movies that we hired. The first one was Jumper, which I happened to have seen in the weekend on DVD at home. It was interesting watching it a second time, but that’s a story for another post. I decided not to watch the second movie, Chuck and Larry, because I had seen it before and it wasn’t that interesting. I went into my cabin and the group of use talked for a while and eventually went to sleep.

In the morning, it was time to pack. I stuffed all my gear in my bag, which didn’t fit as perfectly as it did when I packed to come on the trip, but I managed to get it all in anyway. Then it was time to clean. I ended up vacuuming 3 of the boys cabins which wasn’t that bad because it warmed me up. Then were were on the bus and started travelling.

We did make a stop at the Millbrook Resort, where one of the guys there gave us a quick tour of the place. We had a look at some of the buildings, the eating facilities, and one of the rooms. It was really fancy, and expensive to own. The guy also told us a little about when Bill Gates was staying there. No one ever saw him, but they had stories about his body guards and what room he stayed and what he did.

Then it was time to head back home to Dunedin. The trip back was longer and more boring than the trip there. We stopped again in Alexandra, this time for Lunch at 1pm. This time I had Subway. The nice old lady behind the register talked me into getting more than I intended. I had a meatball sub with a drink and 2 cookies. It was quite nice, much better than KFC by a long shot. Then it was a 3 hour journey back to Dunedin.

We got back home at 4pm and Dad was waiting to pick me up there. It was a really good trip and I enjoyed it lots. I wish it was a little longer so we could look at more things and do more things as well. This is the last trip for the year, and for my high school life. I’m happy my last school trip was a great one. Oh, and not once did I think about the internet, or miss it. Although I was Plurking some of the time I was there. I took heaps of pictures, 200 (500MB) to be exact which I will slowly upload to Flickr over the next few days. Queenstown is AWESOME!

Off To Queenstown…

June28

Tomorrow in the late afternoon, I will be leaving on a school field trip. I will be away all Monday and be returning Tuesday evening. We are going away to collect information about tourism for Geography. And the best New Zealand town to investigate this is of course, Queenstown. There we will have a look at different attractions and activities in and around the town and also have a look at the impacts tourism has had on this area.

It’s going to be a great trip and we will be getting 2 days off school. Here we will look at many attractions such as a gondala, the jet boats, bungy jumping and lots of other Queenstown activities. We have a really tight schedule so there probably won’t be much playing around during the day. Although at night I’m sure we will be able to do what we want.

I’ll be able to talk about what happened more once it has happened and I get back on Tuesday. Again, I will be without the internet all of Monday and most of Tuesday. Although I will be Plurking from my cellphone while I am away so if anyone wants to follow what I am up to while I am away from computer, you can follow my timeline there. This is going to be an awesome trip and I can’t wait to go. See you all later!

Snow!

June24

Yesterday in Electronics, the teacher was updating the school websites snow day page. This was so that when it snowed, the principal can ring him up and get him to put the page up so people know what is going on. This was when I first heard that we were expecting Snow today. The last time we had snow in Dunedin was 23rd July 2007, this exact time last year.

When I woke up in the morning, there had been no snow at ground level. There was a light dusting on some of the hills around Dunedin, but not enough for school to be closed, or delayed. I was a little bumed because I would have enjoyed a Snow Day. Throughout the day, it was cold and windy, but it didn’t look like there could be snow.

well to my surprise, during the afternoon the weather was starting to turn. I went on through my last classes as per usual and as I left to go home, there was a little bit of snow fall. It was not much, and it quickly passed. Then later on when I got off the bus, it started to snow again, this time a big more. Although it didn’t last very long either, but more than the previous falling. A fair bit later, it started to snow pretty kinda heavy. I managed to get the snow fall on video. This lasted a reasonably long amount of time, but the snow didn’t settle :(

On another note, this was the first time I have tried out Flickr for video. I still think that Flickr should be for photos only. Although this case could be an exception, where a photo wouldn’t be quite the same as a short video. I suppose short clips you have taken with your camera are alright. The video service is pretty good, nothing revolutionary, but it ties in with Flickr pretty well. I may consider using it again for video where a photograph just wouldn’t show what a video could.

WWiC - WorldWide iPhone Conference

June10

This morning, at 5:00 am New Zealand time, the main event of the Worldwide Developers Conference took place. This is when Steve Jobs, Apple CEO presents his Keynote. I set my alarm for 4:00 am so I could get up and have plenty of time to do stuff before the keynote, but I ended up sleeping through it and getting up at 5:10 am. At this point, I quickly hopped out of bed to get my laptop and I brought it into bed with me and loaded up many sites so I could see the live happenings, with pictures, of the keynote event.

The whole internet knew what the main parts of the keynote were going to be about, the 3G iPhone, and 3rd Party Applications, as well as the possibility of OS X 10.6. And they were pretty much spot on. It started with a little bit about the next version of OS X but then they moved on and talked a lot about 3rd party applications coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch. At this stage, I was happy I didn’t get up earlier or else I would have been waiting a long time for nothing. I didn’t miss much and there was not much to it. Some developers showed off their apps and games that will be coming to the App Store when it launches.

Towards the end of the keynote, this is when the moment everyone was waiting for came, the announcement of the 3G iPhone. It is basically the same as the original iPhone. The new features are the 3G capabilities, GPS, plastic backing, flushed headphone jack, thinner edges and better battery life. And the price $199 and $299 USD for the 8 and 16 GB versions. This is with a 2-year contract with AT&T. The phone is going to be launching in 22 countries, including Australia and New Zealand on July 11th.

I want this device a lot! And after I watch the video version of the keynote, I am going to want to 100 times more. Reading about it and looking as some pictures of it makes me excited but hearing about it from the Steve Jobs and seeing it on video is going to increase the hype for me by an infinite amount. The only issue I had, was that I was not prepared to get this phone on a contract with Vodafone, but later on in a press release, they announced that it would be available on prepaid and contract plans.

Now this phone is going to be quite expensive in New Zealand. To get an idea of the price it will cost, double the US price and add about 25% on to it, which would make the iPhone cost probably around $500 to $650 NZD, and I assume that is with a 2 year contract with Vodafone. The prepaid version, I would say yu are looking about about $1,000 and $1,200. That is way too much! I am not willing to pay anywhere near that amount, especially for a cellphone I will hardly use as a cellphone.

Since that is the case, I would be better off with an iPod Touch. Although I would really love an iPhone because I don’t carry around a cellphone and an iPod + iPhone would be the idea device and pocket companion for me. At this stage, I would be happy to obtain a original iPhone. I don’t particularly need the 3G and GPS features so a simple iPhone would still be more than ideal for me. I might think about looking for a second hand iPhone but I still like the idea of having the iPhone 3G. We will see how this plays out.

Geography Beach Fieldtrip

May24

Despite yesterdays awful weather, both of the year 13 Geography classes went on a fieldtrip down to the beach. The purpose of this trip was to see human interference on coastal processes. This is important because the information we will collect and the things we will see will help us with an internal assessment later on in the term.

So anyway, when I woke up that morning, I could hear the rain hitting the roof of the house. I was a little disappointed because I had hoped for better weather because I would rather stay warm and dry than cold and wet. I was sure they wouldn’t cancel the trip so I went up school prepared, with pens, paper, lunch and a camera. As I got to school, the rain had settled, although it looked like it could start again at anytime. Regardless, down at the beach was going to be wet and icky.

Everyone got on the bus, and we were off on the trip. Our first stop was down to the Dunedin City Council where we would meet with a lady that will talk about Coastal Dunedin. Oddly, she was Australian and had only been here doing the job for 5 weeks, although she did seem to have a fair bit of knowledge. She talked and there was a slideshow on the projector, but I couldn’t see that. I did have a look and touch of some plants that are down there.

After that, we started heading down to the beach area. But before we went there, we stopped outside McDonalds for people to get (and eat) lunch. It was only quarter to 11 so it was a very early lunch. Me and my mates decided to walk down the road a little bit and get Burger King instead. I got a BK Chicken Value Meal. It was really good, much much better than anything McDonalds could offer.

Then it was time to go down to the beach. We went down the St Clair beach and walked along it. We looked at the water and what the beach looked like. Everyone took heaps of pictures so we could look at them and refer to them later on. During this walk, the weather was starting to get worse. It didn’t pour down, but it was starting to drizzle. We then got back into the bus and drove further along the beach. At this point, it was raining. The teacher decided that we would stay in the bus and not go outside and do what was originally planned.

Driving around for 2 hours was interesting but started to get boring. Then we got back to school and I went home. I don’t know if it is a good thing or a bad thing that the weather was bad, but at least we didn’t have to go out in the rain and get cold and wet. If it wasn’t raining, we would have been collecting data of the beach such as measurements, calculations, sketches and pictures of the beach, so I suppose we got of that work. The trip wasn’t that bad because it meant a day of school. I can’t wait for the next Geography fieldtrip later on in the year, we’re going to Queenstown!
